How to Set Up the Perfect Pet Corner at Home
Share
A dedicated pet corner isn't just aesthetically pleasing — it gives your pet a sense of security, routine, and ownership over their space. Here's how to create one that your pet will actually use.
Step 1: Choose the Right Location
Pets feel safest with their back to a wall and a clear sightline to the room. Avoid high-traffic areas or spots near loud appliances. Natural light is a bonus, but avoid direct midday sun — pets overheat easily.
Step 2: The Perfect Bed
This is the foundation of your pet corner. Choose based on your pet's sleeping style:
- Curlers: Donut/calming beds with raised edges
- Stretchers: Flat orthopedic mattresses in a size that allows full extension
- Burrowers: Cave-style beds or beds with a hood
For senior pets, orthopedic memory foam is worth the investment.
Step 3: Feeding Station
Keep food and water in the pet corner but slightly separated from the bed. Elevated bowls reduce neck strain for large dogs. A water fountain keeps water fresh and encourages hydration.
If you use a smart feeder, position it where your pet can approach from the front without feeling cornered.
Step 4: Enrichment Zone
Add 2–3 toys on rotation. Don't leave all toys out permanently — novelty drives engagement. A scratch pad for cats or a chew toy for dogs gives them something to do independently.
Step 5: For Cats — Add Vertical Space
Cats need to be able to survey their territory from height. A cat tree, wall-mounted shelves, or even a cleared window perch adds the vertical space cats crave.
Keeping It Clean
- Wash bed covers weekly
- Wipe down hard surfaces daily
- Clean water fountains and feeders weekly
- Replace scratchers and toys when worn (frayed rope or cracked plastic can be hazardous)
