How to Clean and Maintain Your Dog's Orthopedic Bed (Step-by-Step)

A quality orthopedic dog bed is an investment — and like any investment, it lasts longer with proper care. Here's how to keep it clean, fresh, and supportive for years.

How Often Should You Clean It?

  • Cover: Every 2–4 weeks, or immediately after accidents
  • Foam core: Every 2–3 months
  • Spot cleaning: As needed

Step 1: Remove and Wash the Cover

Most quality orthopedic beds — including our bolster memory foam bed and leather sofa bed — come with removable, machine-washable covers.

  1. Unzip and remove the cover
  2. Shake off loose hair outside
  3. Machine wash on cold or warm (max 40°C), gentle cycle
  4. Use pet-safe, fragrance-free detergent
  5. Tumble dry on low, or air dry flat — never high heat (shrinks fabric)

Step 2: Clean the Foam Core

Never put foam in the washing machine — it will tear apart. Instead:

  1. Take the foam outside and vacuum both sides
  2. Mix warm water with a small amount of pet-safe dish soap
  3. Gently scrub soiled areas with a sponge or soft brush
  4. Rinse with clean water (avoid soaking the foam through)
  5. Press out excess water with a towel — do not wring
  6. Air dry completely before reassembling (24–48 hours)

Important: Never reassemble with damp foam — mold will grow.

Step 3: Dealing With Odors

Sprinkle baking soda on the foam, leave for 1–2 hours, then vacuum. For the cover, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle — it neutralizes odors without leaving scent.

Step 4: Hair Removal Tips

  • Use a rubber glove or damp sponge — more effective than a lint roller
  • Vacuum the cover weekly between washes
  • Our plush HR bed has a tightly woven cover that releases hair easily

When to Replace the Bed

Even the best foam eventually breaks down. Signs it's time for a new one:

  • The foam bottoms out (you can feel the floor through it)
  • Visible lumps or uneven areas
  • Persistent odor even after cleaning
  • Your dog avoids the bed

With proper care, a quality bed like our handmade plush orthopedic mattress can last 3–5 years. Shop our full range with free worldwide shipping. 🐾
