How to Choose the Right Size Orthopedic Dog Bed (With Size Chart)
Share
Buying the wrong size dog bed is one of the most common mistakes pet owners make. Too small and your dog hangs off the edge. Too large and they feel insecure and exposed.
Here's how to get it right the first time.
Step 1: Measure Your Dog
Measure your dog while they're lying down in their natural sleeping position. Add 15–25cm to both length and width to get the minimum bed size.
Size Chart by Breed
| Dog Size | Breeds (examples) | Recommended Bed |
|---|---|---|
| Small (up to 10kg) | Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu | Medium Orthopedic Bed |
| Medium (10–25kg) | Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Border Collie | Handmade Plush Orthopedic Bed |
| Large (25–45kg) | Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd | Extra Large Orthopedic Bed |
| Extra Large (45kg+) | Great Dane, Newfoundland, Saint Bernard | Giant 180cm Dog Bed |
Step 2: Consider Their Sleeping Style
- Curlers: Dogs that curl into a ball sleep well in round beds. Our donut tunnel bed is perfect for this.
- Sprawlers: Dogs that stretch out fully need a flat rectangular mattress-style bed with plenty of room.
- Head-resters: Dogs that like to rest their chin on an edge love bolstered beds with raised sides.
Step 3: Don't Forget Foam Thickness
For dogs over 20kg, you want at least 8–10cm of foam thickness. Our jumbo memory foam sofa bed is ideal for heavy dogs.
When in Doubt, Go Bigger
Dogs rarely complain that a bed is too large. If you're between sizes, always size up — especially for growing puppies. Check out our premium leather orthopedic sofa for a durable option that fits large dogs perfectly.
